We have recently completed a re-design of the University of Nottingham’s Walled Garden. The existing Memorial Gazebo has been revitalised and brought into a new space that includes a new Legacy Wall, seating areas for contemplation, and lush planting with year-round interest. Most of the existing structural planting and historic features were retained.
The design was inspired partly by the work of renowned English botanist, meteorologist and astronomer Edward Joseph Lowe. In his lifetime, he published papers on a wide variety of subjects, including luminous meteors, sunspots, the zodiacal light, meteorological observations during the eclipse of 1860, conchology, ferns, grasses and
other plants.
Prior to our involvement, the garden lay in a charming state of romantic disrepair. Wild and overgrown, it still whispered hints of its past grandeur, with hidden pathways and aged stonework. Our aspiration was to revive these remnants of beauty, transforming the garden into a modern-day area for contemplation and reflection, whilst honouring its historic essence.
